Pet Visits

Most pets prefer to remain in their own homes while you are away on vacation or business. The surroundings are familiar and like us, they are creatures of habit. This is especially true with older animals and ones with special needs. Traveling and unfamiliar environments are very stressful for them.

While you are away, it is important that your pet be visited every day. A day without company is very long (much longer than it would feel for us). Daily visits help break up the day giving them the mental, physical and emotional stimulation that they need. The love and attention they receive from us helps to reassure them and relieve some of the stress of your absence.

Many animals, especially cats, are fastidious creatures and skipping days will cause them distress as their litter boxes or cages become dirtier. This can lead to problems such as inappropriate elimination, i.e., going outside of the litter box. Once begun, these problems are difficult to rectify. It is also important that your animal has fresh food daily. Contamination of the food could easily occur, and someone should monitor their daily intake (and output) to make certain that they remain healthy.

We all want the best for our pets. The daily visit while you are away helps keep them more active and happier because they have something to look forward to besides waiting for your return.

Dog Walking

Dogs, like people, derive great benefits from physical exercise. It not only helps to keep them physically fit, but it is also beneficial to their mental state. Being physically and mentally fit positively affects an animal's emotional state. A dog who is bored and frustrated may exhibit destructive behavior, inappropriate elimination, and separation anxiety. The reverse is true as well - an unhappy animal is less likely to be mentally and physically fit.

Young dogs develop good habits through appropriate regular walks that will carry through their lives. Daily walks allow them to explore new and old territory, channel their energy, and gives them purpose which makes them happier. Walks also help socialize the young dog through the added contact with the dog walker and meeting other dogs during the walk.

The older dog needs to keep active and flexible to stay agile. This helps ward off health problems. Often the physical benefit and the new found enjoyment of the walk gives the older dog a new lease on life.

Alone at Home Pet Care specializes in dogs with particular needs. Your dog may be fearful of other dogs and need solitary walking. Your dog may be older or have a physical disability where walking in a pack is inappropriate. We cater to your animal’s particular need.

Medication

It is very stressful when our pets become ill, and their veterinarians prescribe medication. It is not always easy to coax our beloved companions to take their medication. Some people are uncomfortable with the administration of some medications. Certain prescriptions require treatments midday while you are not at home. Administering medication appropriately becomes even more complicated when you have to leave for vacation or a business trip. It is difficult to find someone you trust to take over the task of medicating your pet.

At Alone at Home Pet Care, we have the experience and training to assist you.  A large part of John’s responsibility while working in Toronto animal hospitals was  medicating patients.  He has pilled, given injections, tube fed, and given oral liquid medications to a wide variety of pets, including dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, birds and reptiles.

Alone at Home Pet Care believes that medicating pets should be done with the least restraint possible.  We carefully follow your veterinarian’s instructions using the procedures that you have found helpful with your pet.  We carefully measure the dose and make note of the medication’s possible side effects.  The treatment takes place at the beginning of the visit to allow time to monitor your animal.  We ensure that the experience of being medicated is as comfortable and as positive as possible for your pet.

Home Security Visits

Most of us are concerned with the security of our homes, especially when we are away.  For this reason, Alone At Home Pet Care in Toronto offers the Home Security Visit.  This service is designed for people who do not have pets at home, but are concerned with the safety of their residence while away on business or vacation.

Alone At Home Pet Care makes your home looked lived in by:

  • bringing in your mail, flyers, and newspapers
  • turning lights on and off and rotating them
  • opening and closing window coverings

  • checking doors and windows to ensure they are locked
